Let Them Eat Cake
Yankee cake, that is.
Let me explain. I was wandering around in New Milford, CT today, trying to come up with the perfect dessert for my dinner party tomorrow night. One of my guests is “Alphonso” from the “It Is High” Yankees blog, and I was wishing I could serve something with a Yankees theme. Imagine my delight when I spotted a cute shop called Sugar Hoot, walked in and spotted a monitor at the cash register displaying photos of the bakery’s wares, including the above and this!
Needless to say, I whipped out the She-Fan Cam and asked to speak to the genius who made the edible Yankees caps (and yes, the caps are really cakes, which I didn’t realize until I started talking to the aforementioned genius). Here’s Kristyn in her own words.
Who cares if she’s a Red Sox fan? I asked if there was any chance she could make me a Yankees cap made of chocolate cake with vanilla frosting (she puts the blue “cap” part on top of the actual cake, but you can eat it too). Normally, the cake is a special order for birthday parties and such, but she was so kind and accommodating that she agreed to bake one for me for tomorrow night – plus she and her mom/ business partner gave Michael and me two complimentary cupcakes that were absolute heaven. I cannot wait for Alphonso to show up and see the cake, which I will hide in the bedroom until it’s time to bring it to the table as a big surprise. Of course it’s possible that he’ll read this blog post tonight and my “big surprise” will bomb. Stay tuned. In the meantime, if you’re ever in CT and in need of a sugar high, do yourself a favor and wander into Sugar Hoot like I did. You won’t be sorry.

that is the most beautiful cake ever. i just called my friend pam, who is from new milford ct, is a yankee fan (with a red sox fan son) and told her she had to look at your blog and see the best cake ever. i want that for my 50th birthday. i have a couple of years to figure out how to make it happen. i hope you enjoy it.
by the way andy pitched well in trenton although what’s up with the wild pitches? i still can’t believe how well nova pitched yesterday, how great the bullpen is and i’m still happy over the walk off.

I hope your friend Pam goes into Sugar Hoot and orders the cake, Barbara. The owners are such nice people and their desserts are fabulous, judging by the cupcakes they treated us to. That cake looks YUMMY! Mmmm, makes me want to drive up to CT and get one. What a neat dessert. Jane, what kind of camera do you use to record all the she-fans? Is it one of those flip cameras, or just the video setting on your digital camera? I plan on recording some she-fan commentary when I go see the Yanks in Baltimore next weekend. Wow! That cake looks incredible! It never fails… I am always amazed when I see cakes like that. Especially when Kristyn was explaining it, she made it sound so simple. I couldn’t even dream of making something half as nice as that!
But anyway, enjoy the cake tomorrow. Will you be putting up pictures/video of it? Because I’d love to see it! And hopefully the Yankees can give you a win to go along with that cake tomorrow. 🙂
That’s funny cause I just finished watching a late episode of Ace of Cakes. 😀 That’s a great find. Maybe I’ll get it for my mom for her next b-day. It’s funny you kept mentioning how the cap was edible as if we didn’t believe you lol. I also watch Cake Boss, Ultimate Cake Off, etc…maybe I’m obsessed but, it is pretty amazing how they make those cakes. Can’t wait to see his reaction, tell him to at least pretend to be surprised if he read the post. 😛
I use a Flip Video Camcorder, Becky – the Mino, which, I think, is the most basic model. I got it a few years ago and it does a pretty nice job even for someone as technically clueless as I am. Just point and record, then upload to your computer. Looking forward to your video of the Yanks in Baltimore.
I’m always amazed too, Sarah. I can cook, but nothing comes out looking like it’s supposed to. LOL. I’ll try to remember to record the reaction to the cake after I bring it out tonight – and of people taking their first bites!
I love Ace of Cakes, seindsfeld. Those people are incredibly creative – like a combo of artists and architects, not to mention bakers – and I don’t know how they come up with the presentations they do. I guess I did keep mentioning that the cap was edible because I couldn’t figure out how Kristyn was able to do it, plus when I first saw a pic of the cap it was with adorable little baseball cupcakes.
If you recall from your past cake postings, I love cake! Save me a piece. If you stay in Ct much longer you’ll qualify to pay State Income Tax! Arnolds loss will be Jody’s gain.
I do recall, John. So you have to go to this place. It can’t be that far from you, right? It’s only been open about three months and the proprietors are great. You need to get in your car and come! Ah, I remember those days of state income tax. No thanks!
I would eat the hell outta that cake… and not feel guilty about it 😉

I hope you tipped Krysten as if she was a Yankee fan. That’s all part of our campaign to win the ‘hearts and minds’ of Red Sox nation. In fact, I think NYC residents can write-off that type of expense on the state/city income tax return.
Not only does this shop exist in a big box store world, Mike, but there’s another little place down the street that sells ice cream and other sweets. There’s even an independent book store in town – a miracle!
I didn’t tip her, jojovanb, but she seemed happy to have the exposure on the blog. Does that count?
Jane, can you really trust a Red Sox fan? Hopefully she doesn’t have any “secret ingredients” for Yankees cakes 😉 ! She may look all sweet and innocent, but looks can be deceiving. Kidding aside, though, you’ll have to let us know how the cake tastes. Enjoy!

Ooo, what fun!! Those cakes & cupcakes are fab-u-lous!! Wonder how many The Babe coulda consumed? What a creative flair…that will just MAKE any dinner party!!
Somethin’ special about having your cake, and eating it too. We can all hope that there’s some kinda good symbolism, or omens, or Javy Krishna karma, all baked in…
Glad that the boyz finally had a travel day off, too — what was it, something like 20 straight days with a game? So now, maybe recharged for the stretch, deal with the hot nites in Texas, and then see what Mr. Lee has to offer come Sunday. In the meantime, have a GREAT dinner party (now, how could you not?), and tell us what it’s like to “eat your hat”…!!

Thanks, Dave. The weather has turned very fall-like and chilly, so I guess someone’s telling me it’s time to fly back to California. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy my last couple of days on this coast.

Ohhhhhh why do people make such pretty pastries? It makes me feel sad to destroy them by them it into my piehole.

Hi Jane & Fellow Baseball Fans….
Cake & Yankees…what a yummy duo !!!! I LOVE that cake …the hat is so realistic. It must be nice to be so creative …unfortunately I’m not.
I hope the Yankees have a great road trip …I’ll be seeing the tail end as I’ll be going to the weekend games in Baltimore (Sat. & Sun.). I’ll then have two games left at the Stadium with Tampa and the final game against Boston. Last year I was at the game when the Yankees clinched the division and won their 100th game ….that was against BOSTON…. how sweet it was !!! I just can’t believe that there is one home stand left ….where did this season go to?
I do have a piece of good news ..for me that is …I should be moving back to my home Sept. 20th …almost 5 months after the fire. That time really flew too …thankfully.

The Yankees had 14 walk offs last year (3 in a row against the Twins! I’d forgotten that.) For the first two, there were no pies.

Sue, I’m happy to report there were no secret ingredients in the cake. It was delicious and I lived to tell the tale!
I felt guilty cutting into the cake, Serena. It was so pretty when I opened the box, but within minutes it was gone.
Great news that you’ll be moving home, Peggy!!! You’ve been such a good sport about having to live elsewhere. I hope your trip to Baltimore and the remaining home stand will be filled with Yankees victories.
