I Almost Lost My Sanity Tonight
And I doubt I’m the only one. If you stayed up to watch the finale of Yanks-Diamondbacks, you’re with me. What a crazy game. It started off with Dontrelle Willis walking SEVEN batters and yet the Yankees kept screwing up scoring opportunities with lousy at bats and base-running blunders. Cano, who’s been genius for us, had an off night at the plate (for him), and Jeter and Posada (pinch hitting) were frustrating. Vazquez wasn’t as sharp as he’s been, and Marte? Please. How can you call yourself a reliever when you come in and walk two, balk and throw a wild pitch? How? That’s the opposite of relief, Damaso.
The happy news is that the Yankees, who’d been trailing, tied the score on a hit by – yes, indeed, Colin Curtis – and, after Marte stank it up, a sac fly by A-Rod pulled them even again. And then it was on to extra innings! (Sorry for you, east coasters.)
A solo shot by Granderson gave us the lead in the 10th – nice night for him, btw – and with Mo coming in for a second inning of work I figured we were golden. Not so fast! Mo actually loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the 10th! I nearly died.
But then – instead of giving everybody nightmarish flashbacks to 2001 – he pulled out a miracle, retiring the side as if it were no big deal. The Yankees won the game and the series – and gained ground on the Rays and Red Sox. I’ll sleep well, I think, once I calm down.

I just wrote about those nightmare from 2001. I’ve walked around with a Diamondback logo encrusted dagger in my heart for the longest time since then. Mariano being my fav Yankee made it hurt even more. Tonight was awesome. A little redemption with the way things almost went bad (as if being a first ballot hall of famer isn’t enough for a career).
What an ugly game that ended so… beautifully!
If only…nine years ago…what could have been…Anywho, I did see you freaking out on twitter Jane, it made me realize I wasn’t the only one. (I sent you a few omgs) How could I be? They can’t hit, bullpen is unreliable (cept Mo), it’s a three way race (four if the Jays still count) and the Yanks decide to start skipping Hughes now???? If they want to skip him, let him start pitching again Mid-August…makes about as much sense. Anywhowho, the aliens took Jeter too I think. Whats wrong with the Captain?? Is he jealous of Varitek’s C on his uniform?? I watched it on and off…and decided to see Mo’s at bat (not bad, Jeter could learn a thing or two :P) But then, bases load, pop up, pop up….swing and a miss…I felt weak at the knees. What makes it even sweeter is Papelbum blew his save muhahaha, to who? The Giambino! Now to Torre, hopefully Jete will pick it up in front of his old boss.
That game was insanity. Sloppy play all around (how many runners were tagged out on the basepaths?) I hope this game did not mark the return of “HIDP” Jeter. Two in one night?
I did love how the whole team got up to watch Mo’s at bat. He’ll get a hot one of these days.
We got the win and that is what is important. But still, I hope we clean it up when we get to LA.
I was gonna say… there’s just something about Mo and the D’backs… but yeah, he proved me wrong 😉

Almost, but not quite, like looking at a car wreck – you know you should turn away but you keep watching. UGLY game. I tried to go to sleep, I really did. But I was up at the end to watch the Mo show (not to be confused with YES-Mo, which has to stop!) and thankfully see us pull out a win on a night that we should have blown the D-Backs away. Seriously, Mo looked like a Zen master sitting there on the bench waiting to take his at bat, and he looked pissed during the bottom of the 10th – fortunately (or to quote him, “Thank God”) he was back to his charming self in the post-game. I’m a little concerned about Jeter’s bat (maybe he’s just looking forward to his reunion with “Mr. Torre” tomorrow) and hope he didn’t pull anything on that funny play late in the game. Glad to see the Yankee faithful greatly represented in AZ and I’m looking forward to seeing many of us in LA tomorrow!

You put it exactly right, YankeeCase. It was an ugly game that ended beautifully. So many opportunities, so many mistakes! I couldn’t believe it. The AZ pitchers walked, like, 13 batters and we kept running ourselves out of innings. Disgraceful. BUT Mo was grace under pressure. Gotta love that.
I did see your omg’s on Twitter, seindsfeld. LOL. There were plenty of omg moments too. With AJ in Arkansas to tend to his grandfather, I wonder if Girardi will decide to start Hughes on Saturday after all. Might be an interesting development. Don’t know what to say about Jeter, but he does seem to be hitting into double plays again. Maybe he will turn it up a notch for Mr. Torre.
Sloppy sloppy sloppy, cheshirecat! I, too, hope they clean it up for this weekend. I read that Girardi spoke to both Swisher and Tex about missing signs and stuff. Oy. And Mo gave us all heart attacks. He said later that he takes it one out at a time, and it showed. I don’t know how anybody could stay calm in that situation but he did. Amazing.
Maybe Mo was just messing with us, Jeff. He said, “I’ll give you a scare just like 2001 and then show you who’s boss.” That’s it.
I was worried about Jeter hurting himself on that play too, ladyjane, but we’ll never know with him unless he’s virtually out of the lineup on Friday night. Don’t know what to make of his slump, if that’s the right word to call it, but thank God for Granderson’s productive night. And Gardner continues his hot hitting. Mo is a total Zen master. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all be like that?
I keep running out of things to say about Mo, Peggy. He’s just an incredible pitcher/athlete/person. I loved how the guys were laughing on the dugout steps when he came up to bat – and made contact! Big smiles all around. I hope you have a safe and uneventful trip west tomorrow and that you guide our boys to victory that night. Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday before the game.

I was awake to see Mo nail it down (along with a little anxiety). I didn’t get to sleep till after two and was up at 7:00 to get ready for work..BUT..it’s my LAST DAY …YAY !!! I’ll be flying out tomorrow morning and hopefully hitting the West Coast at 12:30 pm all set to see the Yankees take on the Dodgers later in the day… :o). Thankfully today’s an off day for the Yanks .. hopefully I can get to sleep at a decent hour as I have an early flight. I’ll be there soon Jane …bet you can’t wait ..haha.
I read in the paper that when Mo came in they played the final out of the ’01 Series. I guess they were hoping for the same outcome but as Mo says “Thank God” that didn’t happen. He’s just amazing …so cool and collected after loading up the bases with no outs. I doubt there will ever be anyone like Mo again. When God made him He threw away the mold. We are so fortunate to have called him ours for so many years (and hopefully for a few more).

I was at the game last year when he got his first RBI via a walk from K-Rod (how sweet that was …lol). He also got his 500th save that game. It was pure joy watching Met fans WISHING they had our Mo. Anyhow, I’m glad the Yanks are out of Arizona, Dave. The snake rattle noise they play is almost worse than the rally monkey. And the swimming pool at that stadium? Please. Loved the Giambino’s “true Yankee” demonstration. LOL. Will definitely fire up the She-Fan Cam for my visit to Dodgerland on Saturday.

The way the Dodger have been playing you should have no problems. That picture above JAne, resembled me after Kemp and Martin were picked up at second in the 9th inning trailing 2-1.
Ely deserved better support. Two errors by Furcal. I know he just came back from D.R. after losing his dad so I forgive him but the other two tools, is unnaceptable. First the speedy brainless Kemp gets thrown out at second then would you believe Martin gets thrown out at second while Reed Johnson is trying to score the tying run in the 9th at Angel Stadium? UGHHHH

So…the shamans and other local tribesman took out their talismans and tried to put their snaky voodoo on the Bombers. What’d I tell ya about Arizona? And it almost worked. We certainly played like a team under some strange spell…but maybe that final effort, their replay of The Video That Shall Not Be Watched, was their own undoing.
Glad to be gone from the desert. They can have it. And I also said that Mo Owed Them One. And so he did…and with a delicious setup, so to speak. And, as seindsfeld has noted, how delicious that it came on the same night when Old Giambino got a little revenge of his own. Truer words were never said than Noel Coward’s “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” Amen to that.
And now, onward. I am SO excited for youse guys, all getting together in L.A.!! Make SURE you have extra batteries, or an extra charged battery pack…whatever keeps that She-Fan Cam rolling (and let Michael eat/drink WHATEVER HE WANTS if he’s Cameraman #1)! Keep the ball rollin’, as Jay & The Techniques once sang…”on your mark, get set, let the hittin’ start…” — and have a grrreat time!!
We expected to beat the team that is arguably the worst team in the NL — it should have been easier but as they say, “A “W” is a “W” ” — the way Willis started, I thought it was going to be a real whipping but no one could have predicted how that game went. The ending was a very good test for the heart but in the long run Mariano was incredible. My husband was amazed at how he never loses his cool – at least not visably.
Glad the team has a one-day rest before the Dodger series. Have a ball, Peggy and Jane! GO YANKEES!!!
Last night game aged me terribly, and kept me awake for another hour, but what a great end. To watch Mo the God do his best thing with the bases loaded as if were merely one spring training game was priceless. Javy was ok, maybe he gets depressed for the lack of run support (I’d be). I envy all of you who will go to the Dodgers-Yankees series, have a great time, I’ll be sending mi best vibes ad wishes from here to all of you. That’s great news about your house Pegg! Enjoy the last days of the room service.

Thanks for filling in the blanks. I woke up a few times and saw the score, but couldn’t stay awake. I happened to catch Mariano grabbing his glove in the dugout, so I figured he had at least pitched part of the previous inning.
Unfortunately, I fell back to sleep before they came back from commercial.
I never expect anything, Diane. We lost to the Nationals last year! I always feel that any team is capable of beating any other, so nothing surprises me anymore. That said, I kept hearing about how bad the AZ bullpen was and I figured we’d thump them. But we did win the series and now it’s on to LA. As for Mo, I think he should teach a clinic when he finally retires (not soon, I hope). It would be instructive to other closers to learn how NOT to lose their cool in pressure situations. Glad for the off day too!
I know the Dodgers have hit a bad patch, Emma, but our series should be a good one, given all the history with Torre and everything. And thanks for the info and the offer for a ticket. If anyone needs one, go to Emma’s blog and leave a comment. No apologies necessary for the rant. I hear you loud and clear and sympathize!

Jojovanb, the game was so topsy-turvy and weird that you must have thought you were dreaming every time you woke up. The AZ pitchers handed us the game and we couldn’t get it done, but in the end we did. (Did that just make sense?)
Peggy, I’m wondering if A.J. will actually pitch on Saturday. He left the team to be with his grandfather in Arkansas and is supposed to be back Friday. But could they substitute Hughes on Saturday? I wouldn’t be shocked. Great crowd of Yankee fans in AZ during that series, some of whom will be at the Dodger games too. So expect lots of shirts with the interlocking N-Y.

I completely avoided writing about the Dodgers in my last entry and was able to maintain my sanity because of that! 🙂 Thankfully there is other baseball being played with more heart than my own team has. But, still hoping we’ll be up for the series this weekend. If not, maybe the Bruins can give the Dodgers a few lessons. As the saying goes, “They may be bums, but they’re our bums!”

With both Vasquez and Willis on the mound, it must have been murder to watch the game without throwing at least a dozen tennis balls at the television or computer screen. Both pitchers’ have now seemed to have left their “A” game at home,and hopefully they did not lose it in the Denver airport baggage claim ( inside joke).
You can always look at it another way….It did not last almost 139-ish games like that tennis set in Wimbledon that seemed to go on for at least a week.
Crazy thing about InterLeague, sometimes you can see old friends like Dontrelle on the mound, and see why they quickly depositied him in Arizona…….just saying….

That match at Wimbledon was insane, Renegade! I got up this morning and the fifth set was like 59-59 or something. Glad Isner finally won it, but I can’t imagine how his legs must feel (like jelly, I guess). Poor Dontrelle. I don’t think he’s long for the majors.
ahh there are those days where your team just disregards your feelings and starts driving you up the wall. Or punching one, what say you? The Dodgers shelled us tonight it was pretty bad. Not to mention that half the crowd consisted of Dodger fans. It’s awkward when the “Let’s go dodgers!” chants are louder than the “let’s go angels’ ones 😦
