Preparing Teixeira For Game 2 Vs. The O’s
I’m assuming that after Mark Teixeira struggled at the plate on Monday, he watched video of his performance with hitting instructor Kevin Long and searched for any possible mechanical malfunctions in his swing.
But maybe there was more to the story. My theory is that Jeter and Girardi put their heads together during the game to try and figure out what was bothering their new first baseman.
“I think it’s opening day butterflies,” said Girardi.
“I think it’s all those fans booing him,” said Jeter.
“What should we do about it?” asked the manager.
Jeter smiled knowingly, motioned for the clubhouse attendant and disappeared into the dugout.
After the game, Derek took Tex aside and sat him down in the players’ lounge.
“Have a look at this and you won’t be intimidated by the fans here,” said Jeet. “Seriously. They can’t even sing.”
Speaking of fans, the Blue Jays announced that they have banned alcohol at the Rogers Centre for three games after drunken and disorderly spectators threw various items onto the field during Monday’s opener against the Tigers.
It turns out the Rogers Centre has had its share of disorderly conduct, including this little episode last year.
Isn’t there enough happening during a game to entertain people? I’ve never understood the appeal of streaking or batting around a beach ball or even doing the wave. Am I missing something?

Despite it taking a stab at Teix, the Boo Teixeira song has a nice ring to it, lol.. My favorite line however: “But now Yankee fans think they can take us…” Pfffffff, we could ALWAYS take them, lol. I hope Teix hits a grand slam tonight.

Mark Texieria said it well when he said if you are a Yankee, you will get booed on the road. He is traditionally a slow starter.
A few “bad singers” as Jeter put it in your story should not affect how a Yankee does, no matter whom they are. It is going to be about making adjustments and realizing every true team fan except the Yankees’ fan, hates the Yankees. The reason is that every team cannot afford to keep the Sabathias and Texierias on their teams and they always end up on the Yankees. Since these players end up there, they get booed. It is the least we 29 other teams can do. Remember Texieria should and could have easily signed with hometown Baltimore and didn’t. This is a slap in the face to the hometown fans.

regardign the waves, I dont remember were (maybe I’m still traumatized) we did 20 waves non-stop, I dont remember if it was an O’s game or a Nats game I went…. hmm.. I have nothing against waves and things like that.. it’s fun when you’re in a big group.
If he’s fanatically studying video after one game then he’s gonna be a basket case by the time he gets back to NY if he doesn’t start hitting immediately.

The wave I don’t mind so much. But I hate beach balls. You can’t always control those things, and they end up in the playing field. Then the umpires have to call time and blah blah blah. It’s so irritating. Although I usually don’t engage in a wave unless I’m beyond plastered because at that point, I can barely pay attention to the game. That’s happened once, for the record. 🙂

Jane, I can’t stand the wave and refuse to participate in it. To me, the wave is a football thing – it works best in stadiums that are continuous ovals (like football stadiums). Most baseball stadiums have gaps in the seating, especially in the outfield, so it doesn’t work as well, always gets out of sync, and ends up looking stupid.
Oh, and I actually sort of enjoyed the Texiera song – it was catchy – but could have done without seeing the drummer stick drumsticks in his nostrils. Ick!

I’ve been to the Skydome (Rogers Centre) and can attest to the fact that they hand out cards to people in the first row reminding them of how to act. When I was there it was signed by Cito Gaston in his first go-around. But based on my experience there, the fans are lifeless and have no idea about baseball. I guess these rowdy fans must have been bussed in from the USA or something.

And, as usual, you remind me of something…Mike Ferraro told me this Yogi story back in ’91…it was a summer game in the mid-70s, when Yogi was managing the Mets (well, whenever that was)…he came home that nite and told the wife, “Carmine, ya won’t believe what happened at da ball game today. In da 7th inning, two kids jumped outa da bleachers and dey ran NAKED across the outfield!”
So Carmine naturally asked, “Well, were they boys or were they girls?”
To which Yogi replied, “How the hell do I know? They had BAGS over their heads!!”

I’m not a fan of the beach balls, Jen, because they take my attention away from the game. Who wants a ball in their face? I guess I just don’t include it as part of the “fan experience.” Being plastered changes all that, of course. 🙂

Maybe they should sell only US made beer for three games and then they can slowly pull the beer drinkers drunken behavior to a subtle “beer buzz” mentality.
Oh, and poor Zack Hample is in Rogers Centre this week. I know he is staying that the stadium hotel, maybe he can get his beer through room service and have it lowered down to him during the game………..Big Tip Big Tip.

I think that anytime a team has a $4 beer promotion, Erin, they’re basically admitting their team is bad and saying, “Just please show up.”

I’m sure Jeter and Girardi’s pep-talk will help Tex. Someone needs to give one to Ellsbury, he went 0-4 too! Smart for the folks at Rogers Centre to ban alcohol for three games… that kind of conduct cannot be tolerated at baseball games. The game is so simple, we don’t need to complicate it anymore.

It’s too bad about the Rogers Centre….having been there for the World Baseball Classic, it was an awesome atmosphere and there was no alcohol-related problems at all…..so hopefully the fans don’t get a bad rep there….
