And The Yankees’ Opening Day Pitcher Is….

I know, I know. It’s only the Opening Day of the spring training schedule and pitchers will be limited to 30 pitches or so, but I didn’t expect to see Gaudin’s name fronting the rotation. By the way, does anyone else think his pitching face looks like a much younger version of this?

The big matchup will be coming the next day, March 4th, when CC will face off against Halladay and the Phillies in Clearwater. Now that’s one I’ll be watching, even if their appearances only last 15 minutes. My guess is Joe was saving CC for just this game. No, it doesn’t count. But it’s an exhibition between World Series contenders and the atmosphere will be charged.

Just a time out from baseball to say, “Is the world coming to an end or what?” First, Haiti. Now, Chile. What a sad state of affairs these earthquakes have wrought, only mitigated by the fact that Hawaii (and California) were spared the affects of a tsunami. But wow, it looks like complete devastation in Chile with aftershocks still coming. On top of record snowfalls in this country, it all makes me shake my head and feel grateful I have a roof over my head.
I’m Going Insane Without Baseball!

It’s January 19th – not too much longer until pitchers and catchers report – but it FEELS like forever. Unless you’re a Mariners fan celebrating the long-term signing of King Felix or a Rockies fan cheering for the deal with Huston Street or a Giants fan getting excited about Bengie Molina, there’s NOTHING to do today except:
– Think about how the Yankees still need a left fielder. (Already did that.)
– Buy spring training tickets. (Already did that.)
– Check out what various bloggers have to say about the Yankees. (Already did that.)
– Contemplate the fact that A-Rod does better in odd years than even ones. (Already did that.)
– Support friends who root for the Jets. (Already did that.)
– Make a donation to the rescue efforts in Haiti. (Already did that.)
– Suggest to my husband that we adopt a Haitian orphan. (Already did that. He said no.)
– Cook something amazing for dinner. (Already did that. We’re having chicken in wine sauce.)
– Rehearse what I’m going to say at my event at Borders tomorrow night. (Already did that. It’s supposed to pour for the 4th day in a row, so who knows if anyone will show up.)
– Write a blog post for tonight. (Just did that. Sorry it’s not very interesting.)
– Try to snap out of my no-baseball funk. (All ideas for accomplishing this are much appreciated.)
– Watch a movie about a woman crazier than I am right now. (In progress.)
A Time Out For Haiti
I was all set to write a smart-alecky post tonight about how the Yankees signed someone named Royce Ring.

Don’t we also have someone named Boone Logan now? The Yankees are accumulating pitchers with cool names if nothing else. Surely, at some point Cashman will get around to signing a left fielder (Yo! Damon!), not to mention some bodies for the currently non-existent bench.
But I’m not really interested in Royce or Boone tonight, knowing that Haiti is such a mess after the earthquake there. When do the people in that country ever catch a break? It’s one disaster after another. So I’d just like to state my hope that Haitians find a way to emerge from this latest horror and that the U.S. can provide aid. I’ll be chipping in on my end. When I hear about a 7.0 quake, I say to myself, “Please don’t let it happen here in California.”
I’ll write about baseball tomorrow, I promise.
