Happy Karaoke New Year!

As I mentioned in last night’s post, I’m going to a New Year’s Eve party where there will be a karaoke machine and guests are supposed to, you know, sing. Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t have subjected myself to the humiliation, but here’s how this all unfolded.
My friend John: “We’re having a New Year’s Eve party this year and we’d love it if you’d come.”
Me: “I’m so there.”
My friend John: “It’ll be cool. You’ll get to meet my daughter and her fiance since they’re in town.”
Me: “I’ll really look forward to that. What can I bring?”
My friend John: “A bottle of wine, if you want. Or maybe something dessert-y and sweet.”
Me: “Will do.”
My friend John: “Oh, and bring your voice.”
Me: “Excuse me?”
My friend John: “We’re having a karaoke machine. Everybody’s gotta sing. It’ll be the perfect way to bring in the New Year.”
I smiled and nodded. And then I thought….Jane, you hate karaoke! Too late. I was trapped, having already said I was going. I’m sure it’ll be fun once I get into it, but I’m really hoping I don’t remind everyone of her…..
Oh, well. Maybe I’ll bring the She-Fan Cam and catch somebody else sounding awful, and if so I’ll be sure to post the video right here.
Wherever you’re going for New Year’s and whatever you’re doing, I hope you have a great time. Here’s to a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous 2011! (GO YANKEES!)

Haha, your friend knew how to invite you. Came up with the karaoke after you had accepted the invitation. Tricky, lol. The only thing that people love to do here is “Singstar”, but until now I luckily never had to do that. I’m a pretty bad singer. Maybe not as bad as the woman in your video, but probably very close. 😉 Anyway, I hope you enjoy the party and yes, take the She-Fan Cam with you. Lol.
I’m going to celebrate with some some friends, a lot of food, wine and talking. 🙂 My New Year is 9 hours earlier than yours, so it’s almost time to get ready.
Happy New Year! Go Yankees! 😀

Play with them Jane. Break into a version of “Hip Hip Jorge” or “Derek Jeeter” and watch how fast others chime in.
All the best to you and Michael in 2011!

Singstar sounds like it would be very karaoke-like, Nadine. One of these days you might have to do it! Hope your New Year’s Eve with your friends is fun. Party hearty but be safe! It’s weird to think it’ll be 2011 there 9 hours before the year changes here.

HAHAHA. What a great idea, John. It’ll be especially funny if it’s a group karaoke and all of a sudden I break away and starting chanting “Hip Hip Jorge.” Will let you know what happens. A very happy and healthy New Year to you and your family.

The truth is, Paul, I don’t know a single Alice Cooper song!

Ugh, the winds, Melissa. I know I have no right to complain, given all the snow you’ve had back east, but this weather has been downright un-California-like. We have frost warnings and 75 mph winds and it’s so cold I’m wearing gloves right now! I’d really rather stay home tonight under 16 blankets, but I’ll bundle up and sing my heart out. Happy New Year!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy celebration. Happy New Year all!

Jane, I’m glad the winds in Southern California didn’t blow you away. Have fun with the karaoke – maybe you can do a group one, so you’re not singing alone.

Too bad you don’t know a song ahead of time – Dave or I could give you new lyrics.

All youhave to do now is slip the Karaoke DJ a $10 bill and they might load up “Empire State of Mind” andyou can ring in the New Year in classic NYY style .
I think you can do both Jay-Z and Alicia Keys proud. Maybe Michael can do the Jay-Z lines…Or Christopher Cross’s “Sailing”.

Have a great time tonight…I will be doing my own singing withg a cover band I sometimes force to let me warble at the mic….Definitely no “Don’t Stop Believing” in their song list (Thank You Lord).

So you’ll be singing too, Renegade? Maybe we can do a duet sometime. LOL. I’d love to do Empire State of Mind tonight, so I’ll mention it to my host since he’s from NY too. Have a great time.

Will take the Cam, Jeff. Maybe I’ll get some worthy video to show everyone. If not, you’ll have to rely on my observational abilities! Michael will be my designated driver, so no worries on that front. Happy Happy to you.

Karaoke, ouch…although, really, it will probably be a blast. We have Rock Band parties sometimes and it’s a similar concept, everyone has to take a turn singing, no exceptions. I usually go with Fortunate Son, something else by CCR or something by Garbage, low range, less vocal gymnastics, easier to avoid butchering. With Karaoke though, you can play the humor card and maybe try something themed like Take me out to the ballgame, Fogerty’s Centerfield or maybe even New York, New York.
    Happy New Year!

I will definitely play the humor card, Kristen, although I’m not sure I’ll have a lot of choice in the matter. I think this is supposed to be “group karaoke.” We’ll see in a few hours. Happy New Year to you!

We’ll definitely be looking for the “post-game” highlights of your New Year’s Eve Party! Enjoy, and have a very Happy New Year! Who knows, perhaps there is a World Series Championship wait for us in the new year! 🙂

I’m on my way to the party now, Scott, with the She-Fan Cam in my bag. If there’s anything fun to shoot, it’ll be in the next post. Happy New Year!

Happy new year everyone! Had a great vacation. Glad to be home, but even more glad I missed the big blizzard. Caught up on posts from the last couple of weeks – really enjoyed the Steve Jobs bit, and always fun to see the laughing lady (though the need to bring her back was in this case disturbing). Hoping for Andy to make a decision this week….fingers crossed it’s the one we want.

  13. Jane Heller

Welcome back, ladyjane, and Happy New Year! So glad you had a great time on vacation and missed the blizzard. Yes, I wish I didn’t have to bring the laughing lady back in an effort to bolster spirits, but that’s the state of affairs at the moment. Andy’s return would go a long way toward putting a smile on this face.
