Big Win For The Yanks = Great Birthday For Me
Life was sweet on Sunday afternoon. My husband took me for a sail on the Pacific Ocean on a gorgeous California afternoon. He even let me steer the boat, which was a little crazy on his part; I have almost no sailing sense and there were seals, pelicans and other boats on either side of us.

It was really fun. The best part? While he was tacking or coming about or whatever sailors call it when they change direction, I whipped out my iPhone just in time to hear John Sterling say the Yankees were up 12-0. I stood up in the boat and yelled, “Woohoo!” No, it didn’t tip over and nobody got hurt. And yes, Melancon gave up the three-run homer about two seconds later, but who cared; I got the birthday present I asked for.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one celebrating. What a day for Gardner and Swisher. Cano too. And Tex – wow. Even Nick Johnson woke up, and Thames made a web gem-worthy catch. I watched a replay of the game after I got home and saw it all – including, of course, the spectacular performance by Hughes. Number five pitcher? No way. So confident. Such command. And he kept the pressure on the White Sox, even though his offense gave him one of these.

(The cushion, not the kid.)
I’m concerned that Granderson will be out for awhile, that A-Rod may or may not have a sore knee and that the bullpen needs some tweaking, never mind Vazquez. But the good news is that the 2010 version of the Yankees is reminding me of the 2009 version — i.e. when somebody goes down, somebody else steps up. The only thing we’re missing so far is this.

No walk-off hero yet. But it’s still early. And speaking of food, my birthday involved a really good dinner at one of Santa Barbara’s most scenic restaurants, the Boathouse.

This place isn’t just near the beach. It’s on it. Take a look at the view from our table, about a half hour before sunset.

Thanks to all for the lovely birthday wishes — here and on Twitter and Facebook. They were much appreciated. Back to business on Monday. The O’s have to be feeling pretty good about themselves after their sweep of the Red Sox. It’ll be up to CC to squash their hopes and dreams — and to the hitters to stay out of Jeremy Guthrie’s way. If I were facing Guthrie, I’d step up to the plate wearing this.

Jane,
You are always welcome to best wishes and greetings galore.
But you did not mention the hike? Hope it also went well today.
Seriously, you think we would forget the numero uno on her special day? You forget who you are dealing with…..Okay, you know, but anyways.
I was looking up at the scoreboard at Tropicana Field and saw Nick Johnson names and some pretty well lit up bases, then a minute later….score was higher and you knew maybe Johnson had found a groove again.
Glad you got some special items today like a great meal at a great seaside bistro, a pleasant sailing expedition on a boat not named “The Minnow”, and got birthday wishes from adoring fans, friends and even a few division foes (lol).

She-Fan,
Let’s hope for 120 birthdays this season. Glad you had a happy one.

Wow! You have some power, Jane. Your birthday wish came true in a BIG way!!!
And it looks like Michael also treated you well. What a lovely way to spend a birthday!
On the post game on the radio, Girardi was very firm in stating that they were just resting ARod. Let’s hope ARod is telling the truth about just being a little sore.
Baltimore may be having a dismal season, but they sure can beat up on the big boys! It must have been very sweet for them to sweep Boston.
Melissa
Jane – We should all have birthdays as nice as the one you had yesterday. The game was great and so much fun to be at. Tex has rounded the corner just in time for that trip to Boston this weekend; Cano continues to amaze; Huuuughes just great; Thames’ catch was super; even Nick Johnson got a hit; Gardner is quickly getting his own set of bleacher creature fans; and what can I say about Swisher? He’s the happiest man in NY, and there’s a mutual admiration society with the right field bleacher creatures and the rest of us out there. BIG homer, and the reaction when he came back out to RF for the top of the 8th was priceless. I’m going to listen to Girardi and not worry about A-Rod’s knee. Grandy out for at least a month isn’t the best news, but all in all I’d say we’re in a pretty good spot right now.
Happy Birthday! I hope you had cake, because that banana cream pie picture looks pretty yummy.
Sorry I missed your birthday yesterday. Left early am yesterday on a Mustang ralley with my kids. They both have awesome Mustangs and my wife and I rode shotgun over the 60 mile road trip. 90 degrees and sunny. Got home to 10 hour power outage. No computer .Enjoyed listening to Yanks on the road.
Happy belated!
Ah, the hike, Renegade. I forgot I mentioned that on Twitter yesterday. It was quite an outdoorsy day, which is just the way I like it when the weather’s this good. We did go hiking in the hills and I’m really feeling it today. Muscles are sore. Ouww. But no snakes or other nasty critters.
HAHA, Duque. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had 120 games like yesterday’s? I could do without that many birthdays though. 🙂
Yup, the Yanks did come through for me, Melissa. So did Michael. I read a transcript of Girardi’s comments about A-Rod, but the Yankees are weird about injuries. Sometimes the situation is murky. I guess if we see A-Rod in the lineup tonight and he looks OK, I’ll be relieved. As for Baltimore, we can’t let them get too cocky. I’m glad they had a nice weekend, but the weekend is over!
Oh, that’s right. You were at the game, ladyjane! What a great one it must have been, especially to sit near Swisher and see that reception he got. Did you take any good pics or video? I guess I’ll believe Girardi about A-Rod, but, as I said to Melissa, I’ll feel better when I actually see A-Rod in the lineup performing normally.
Thanks, Jessica! No cake – I had a gelato – but I agree that the one in the pic looks delish.
A 10-hour power outage, John? That’s annoying. Glad you were able to listen to the game. And the Mustang road trip sounds like fun.
After all these years, Michael’s never taught you to drive the boat?

You just showed you’re as clueless as I am, Paul. You don’t “drive” a boat. LOL. And yes, he’s tried to teach me. I just don’t have the attention span for learning how to sail. It’s a lot of work! I do enjoy being out on the ocean though. It’s a true getaway.
Jane, happy belated b-day! I have been sooo blog-negligent the past week, and yesterday it was so hot here – and Dan won’t yet turn on the A/C because “it’ll cool down later in the week” – that I didn’t even turn on the computer, since it throws off so much excess heat. Your dinner table was THAT CLOSE to the ocean? Hope you saw a fantastic sunset as well. Looks like you had a great day all around!

Rants, Raves, and Random Thoughts
Thanks, Sue. Yes, the table was that close to the water. You would absolutely love the restaurant. Very casual but good seafood. So it was that hot in PA? Wow. It’s only the beginning of May. Crazy.
Sound like you had a lot of fun, Jane. Was it just the two of you?
The team played their best ball to date for your birthday…lots of defense and except for Melancon everything else went well too.
I’m hoping the Orioles will be exhausted from sweeping Boston — certainly what we did to Chicago should make them angry enough to want to sweep Boston as well. Let’s hope!!! GO YANKEES!!!
Hi Jane & Fellow Baseball Fans…
I’m so sorry I missed your Bday Jane. Sounds like you had one grand day including a Yankee win which makes it absolutely perfect. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY MISS JANE !!!!
I do have a good excuse for not commenting about your bday sooner. I had a misfortune last Thursday. My home went on fire due to a fallen tree hitting electrical wires that set off sparks. My home and a church across the street were the only affected areas and thankfully no one was hurt. Unfortunately I will most likely be living out of a hotel (a beautiful Hilton which isn’t too bad) for 3-5 months. I do not own the house but I did have Apt. Insurance and thank God I did. All living expenses, smoke cleanup and storage are covered. I strongly urge anyone who doesn’t have Apt. coverage to get it immediately. It’s inexpensive and as I have found out …well worth it. As I said ..no one was hurt and that is what’s most important. They said to take anything of great value before I went to the hotel so naturally the first thing I grabbed were my Yankee ticket plans… :o). I don’t have to clean or make beds for a few months living in the hotel so I’ll take that as a positive.
The Yankees are on a roll and nothing stops me from following My Yanks ..not even a fire. I’m going to the games tonight and tomorrow. So far I’m 4-0 so I hope to keep that winning record intact.
Back to work …HAPPY, HAPPY Belated Birthday once again …
Go Yankees 2010 !!!
Yes, it was just the two of us yesterday, Diane. I’ll be celebrating with friends next weekend. I don’t know if the O’s will be exhausted or exhilarated. CC will have a lot to say about that!
Oh, Peggy! So sorry to hear about the fire. How traumatic for you! I’m so glad you had the insurance. I agree that it’s very important for people to get it. I know it’s small consolation, but at least your expenses at the Hilton will be covered and, as you said, no one was hurt in the fire. And no beds to make! You’re a real trooper to keep going to games in spite of the upheaval. I hope you see a good one tonight. And thanks for the birthday wishes.
What a great birthday! Even if the Yankees hadn’t won it sounds like it was a great time, but since they did, it just makes it even greater! Plus since you said they never win on your b-day, i agree, you should have a few more 😀 I wouldn’t want to sit that close to the beach, or on it, while eating, don’t you get sand in your food? Plus the Yankees had a good day too. I was wearing my Swisher shirt still, I think I’ll wear it till he has a slump. 😛 1974…that’s the last time the Orioles swept the Bosox in Baltimore…so yeah, I think they’re feeling confident. Btw, do boats have seal insurance?
Please leave that Swisher shirt on, seindsfeld. It must be good luck. You can take it off when he goes 0-for-4, which, I hope, isn’t soon. Didn’t mean to mislead you about the restaurant. It’s not right on the sand. There’s a path between it and the water and the tables are behind a glass barrier (it gets windy down there). Seal insurance? I don’t know, but those adorable animals swim all around you. They do somersaults and are such fun to watch, plus they bark like dogs!
Peggy, I’m so sorry to hear about the fire. You are right: no one was hurt and that is most important. Thank goodness you have the insurance and you can live the “life of ease” at the hotel while they get things sorted out. Your great attitude will take you far.
I hope the games are wonderful for you and you enjoy every minute!
If you need to vent sometime, feel free! We’ll listen.
Melissa
Yes, Peggy. Melissa is right. We’re here for you, so vent away if it helps!!!
Peggy,
good to hear that you are OK and you had insurance! live it up not making any beds!. Last year when I was in Arizona during Spring Training, I met a lady that was staying at the hotel for the same reasons so yes, is a good idea to get insurance.
.
Jane,
Glad you had a great time sailing, hiking in great company and you got the W! Just a great Bday!

It was a really nice day, Emma. Thanks. Our weather has been perfect here in CA, hasn’t it? Hope it continues.
Yes, Jane, we’ve had great weather, even with the winds Thursday night at the stadium. It was sooooo windy and cold thursday night that Vin told us to stay warm on this video:

.
Oh, and I know Jeter’s bday ’cause is two days before mine!
Dear Jane:
Late but not forgotten. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Al your fans from Mexico City (yes, you have at least 5 fans) wish you the best of times.
I had a friend at the Dodger game on Thursday night, Emma, and he didn’t last through all nine innings because it was so cold. Love the video! So you’re a June baby?
Thanks, James. I didn’t know I had five fans in Mexico City. LOL. I’m just grateful that you come to the blog and leave such good comments.
Happy belated birthday Jane. Glad you had a fun time. And it’s wonderful that the Yankees won on your birthday. It’s like icing on your cake!!!

Thanks, Cat! The Yankees’ victory was, indeed, icing on the cake. Couldn’t have asked for more.
Happy Belated, Jane! 🙂
