Welcome to Anaheim, Yankees

It’s west coast time for the Yanks. I hope they’re adjusting to their surroundings and not experiencing any jet lag. They have to be liking the weather. Here’s the forecast for Monday.

I enjoyed the day off, but now that Game 3 is upon us I’m nervous all over again. Angel Stadium has been such a house of horrors for the Yankees. Well, it has.
Sure, we’re up 2-0 in the series and playing confidently. But will our success continue? It’s hard to imagine that the Angels won’t pull it together on both offense and defense and run like crazy if they get on base. On the other hand, Andy Pettitte has the best pickoff move in the universe.
And he’s coming off an excellent start against the Twins. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll show us his old magic against the Angels, our bats will go batty against Weaver, and we’ll steal a game at their house?
The Yankees have confirmed that CC will pitch on Tuesday in Game 4 – and I’ll be in attendance! I’ve got my tickets and can’t wait to see the pinstripes in person. I’ll post pics and video Tuesday night (if the game doesn’t go 13 innings). In the meantime, here are tonight’s musings.

  1. lenn23

Man, that chick in that video is sooo hot! Now is Anaheim in Los Angeles or is Los Angeles in Anaheim? California geography is so confusing! I think both offenses are due for big things. Do not know if I should be afraid of a slugfest or not? Looking at this trip like it is a three game road series. If they take two out of three then they win the series. Even if they take just one it’s still good because they can clinch at home. Just don’t get swept like in July! Go Yanks!!!!!!!

  2. swanton7

First off, have fun at the game tomorrow. Secondly, I said at the beginning of the playoffs that the Yankees were going to sweep their way through the World Series. I know, that sounds cocky, but I truly believe it. So, if my prediction is correct, you’ll be there to see the Yanks win the pennant. Two more Yanks, lets do it!

  3. diane.anziano@gmail.com

OMG, Jane…I’m so happy for you – now I’m really hoping for a sweep. Can you bring your sandwich with you?? Whenever we go to any Yankee game at home we always bring in the same lunch – something I am always pleased and surprised that we’re allowed to do since I’m sure they would like to sell as much food inside the stadium as they can.

I agree that Andy is perfect for game 3 with his amazing move to first. Weaver has been amazing but I think we can get to him, especially if we do it early.

I wish I was off from work today – I would definitely take the Yankee organization up on its kind offer to watch today’s game from the stadium. I think that’s going to be pretty exciting.

Hoping for a great game 3 and an even better game 4. GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!

  4. peggy3

    Hey Jane …

If you can’t bring the Turkey Club with you …EAT IT BEFORE YOU GO !!!! LOL I hope CC throws a great game for you and I REALLY hope it’s the clincher …how exciting would that be ?

I am going to leave work a little early today and head to the Stadium to watch the game. It will be so cool to watch on the HUGE screen with all the die hard Yankee fans.
I’ll miss an inning or two but at least I’ll get there much faster from work then I would going home. I think it’s a great idea on the Yankees part. Tuesday I’ll be with my
Meetup Group at Mickey Mantle’s watching and I’ll be looking for YOU !!! Both games so far have been amazing
and I hope the next two are even better (although it will
be hard to top Saturday’s game…that was unbelievable)

Hoping Andy is as dandy as the last game …GOOOOOOOO YANKEES !!!!!

    Go Yankees 2009 !!!!

  5. bgalaxy@verizon.net

Jane– Good luck at the game tomorrow. Wouldn’t it be so great if they clinch and you get to see it. I can’t stand being amongst the enemy so i stoped going to fenway. I hope you are the good luck charm. i am so nervous for today. If only andy could pitch another gem.

  6. ladyjane303

So excited for you to be going to game 4! I know that you and the turkey club will bring good luck to the boys. Andy needs another good game today – keep the chain moving from CC to AJ to AP. I expect that the Angels bats will wake up at some point, but our winning 2 out of 3 in Anaheim would be just great. Have fun tomorrow! Go Yankees!!!

  7. cheshirecat9

I am feeling very good about this game. We did great our last regular season visit to Anaheim. A-Rod has always hit well there and he is having a monster post-season. Pettitte is healthy and pitching great lately. I don’t think we can count on the Angels continuing to make mistakes, but we don’t need to either. I am glad you are going to the game tomorrow, I hope it is to watch us win the pennant! I didn’t get a chance to post after Fridays game (I was visiting my sister this weekend, proudly wearing my Yankees cap all over Boston) but it was awesome! Cold, sure, but a great game to see. Let’ Go Yankees!!!!

  8. hrcoyankeefan@comcast.net

It is a good thing you have us because I am detecting the first stirrings of anxiety in you. That beast is always lurking isn’t it? Remember how great Andy pitched there after the first inning? He was lights out. That day he had a layoff but today he is in the right place at the right time. And think about the pressure on Jeff Weaver (haha). How will he handle a must win? LOL to video. I love those. You probably know this but you can pack your turkey club with a cold pack. I always take my food to the games though I do like to get a pretzel. Don’t get mad at me but if the rally monkey and sticks can’t hurt you neither can eating a different lunch. Repeat after me: I am not Wade Boggs.

Go Yanks and take care, y’all.

  9. ooaooa

For anyone foolish enough to ask or wonder, yes, “Confidence is High” and on Tuesday, with the famed “She Fan” in attendance, it is even higher! Just ate a turkey sandwich minus the club. It tasted victorious!

  10. Jane Heller

Here’s the deal on the SoCal geography, len. Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County. It’s where the Dodgers play. Anaheim is a city in Orange County, south of LA. The Angels adopted the LA part of their name as a marketing tool. Confusing, I know. I liked it better when they were called the Anaheim Angels, but that’s just me. I think you’re right to look at the games here like a regular road series. No matter what happens, it moves back to the Bronx. I feel better now.

Thanks, Brian. It would be wonderful to see CC win the game I go to – absolutely, insanely great. I’m standing up and cheering just thinking about it.

Diane, I’ll either bring my sandwich into the stadium or eat it in the car driving down. One way or another, that thing is going with me on Tuesday. As for today’s game, I feel good about Andy even though Weaver has been so effective for the Angels. I just hope the Yanks don’t make silly mistakes. I want them to play at a high level.

Can you imagine if I happened to be there if the Yankees clinched, Peggy? Too wild to contemplate. But first things first: we need to win today. So you’re going to watch at the Stadium? I bet that will be fun. The Meetup at Mantle’s will be great too. I doubt very much you’ll be seeing me because I’ll be up above the press box. If a foul ball comes up there, I’ll be the one wearing the Yankees visor!

Oh, cool, Jenn. And I mean cool – literally. LOL. Dress warmly (I sound like a mom) and make sure to wear layers. And most of all, have a great time at the game!

Barbara, I’d much rather be going to Yankee Stadium and sitting among fellow Yankee fans. There’s nothing like it. I don’t love having everybody boo my team when I go to an “enemy” stadium, but it’s part of the deal. And maybe I’ll get lucky and there will be some Yankee fans in my section. Who knows. The important thing is for Andy to pitch a gem today, as you said.

Andy does have to keep the chain moving, ladyjane. No unraveling allowed. I think the Angels’ bats will awaken – they have too many good hitters to be shut down for long – but if Andy keeps us in the game, our offense will take care of the rest. Hopefully. 🙂

You sound very confident, cheshirecat, so I’ll draw on your optimism. A-Rod: good. Andy: good. Yankees: win. Glad you made it back from your sister’s. Wasn’t Saturday night’s game the craziest, most incredible walk-off yet?

I’m very lucky to be going to the game, Jeff. You may be right, and the Yankees will need to go back to the Bronx to win the pennant there. We’ll see.

The first stirrings of anxiety, Laurie? HAHAHA. I’m in a perpetual state of anxiety over the Yankees, but I try to fight it! OK, here we go. I am not Wade Boggs. I am not Wade Boggs. But I’m still bringing the sandwich. LOL!

I’ll be covering my end of the country, John, since you did your part back east. I’ll be so excited on Tuesday morning when I leave home for the drive to Anaheim that I probably won’t sleep the night before. But first things first. We must win today!

  11. Jane Heller

I was delirious before the bacon/cholesterol, Paul, but it’s probably making things worse. I’ll become a vegan when this is all over.

  12. Jane Heller

I’ll figure out something, Buz. I’m too superstitious not to. And I’ll have way more fun if the Yankees win that game!

  13. mel.tmottbg@gmail.com

Lucky you, going to a game in the warmth!!
I had thoughts of going to the new stadium to watch the game, but it’s at least 1 1/2 hours by train. And, I have an appointment to get my haircut. (After reading your book, I know you’ll understand, Jane!)
Let’s hope Andy is dandy. And a nice 5 run first inning for the Yankees would help all our hearts recover from the other night.
    Go Yanks!!!

As for the rally monkey, I’m just going to adapt that children’s rhyme:
Three little monkeys, sitting in a tree.
Teasing Mr. Yankee, can’t catch me.
Along came Mr. Yankee, quiet as can be . . . .

Two little monkeys, sitting in a tree . . .

  14. crzblue2

Lefty sure has a nice pickoff move. I used to love to watch Fernando pick off runners at first.
Make sure you leave the mayo (if you like that stuff) out of the turkey sandwich or take a little mayo package. We don’t want you getting sick.

  15. Jane Heller

I do understand about the hair appointment, Melissa. 🙂 In fact, I’m trying to figure out if I need a manicure for the game tomorrow. (Like anybody will see my hands as I sit up in the nosebleed section.) A nice 5 run first inning? Now that would be a change of pace. I love your poem. And here’s the thing about the rally monkey. If it comes on the screen at Angel Stadium, it means the Yankees are winning. So bring it on.

Fernando was so great, Emma. If Andy does as well today, I’ll be thrilled. And thanks for the tip about the mayo!

  16. irishsoxkid19

Have fun at the game tomorrow!! That’ll be cool to see CC pitch!! When I was at the Yankee- Oriloes game in September, he was pitching then too!! Can’t wait to see the pics!! Dodgers vs Yankees in the World Series? Well, if the Dodgers can put away Phillie, then I will definitally watch the series!!

  17. arizonacacti

First I have to say I am extremely impressed with the Yankees never say die attitude and the fans at the stadium make me proud to be a Yankee fan if the team/organization is not enough. I think the stadium will be rocking as the one in cali.

Girardi is doing such an impressive job with the pitching staff as I watched the dodger game and saw torre leaving his starter and relievers in too long which was a form of torture as a Yankee fan.

Just like the bad weather in NY affected both teams it will be better for both teams in LA but the Yankees are so good in every aspect of the game and very confident I am starting to get on the sweep “bandwagon”, and turkey bandwagon as well. GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. rrrt

That will be too funny if you take the sandwich with you. I totally forgot to wear the “lucky” shirt last night, and the Phils had their biggest margin of victory yet in the playoffs. Your weather forecast looks absolutely heavenly! At least we have actual sunshine today – almost forgot what that yellow thing in the sky is! 🙂
Recipe for victory – just hit all balls to the rightfield wall, Abreu is dreadful when trying to make a catch at the wall (unless he’s drastically improved recently).
    Rants, Raves, and Random Thoughts

  19. Jane Heller

Thanks, Holly. I appreciate that. I know the Yankees are hardly your favorite team, so it’s great that you’re even thinking we might make it to the World Series. The Dodgers have a serious challenge too. Can they beat Philly and advance? Should be interesting all around.

Your comment came just in time, arizonacacti. I was starting to get really nervous about today’s game but your confidence is rubbing off a little. The Yankees’ never-say-die attitude is something they didn’t have last year and it’s a pleasure to watch. I don’t know about a sweep. It would be amazing, but let’s just get through today and see if the turkey sandwich works its magic again.

  20. Jane Heller

So what you’re saying, Sue, is that lucky clothes and food don’t work? LOL!!!!! Now you tell me. I already ordered today’s sandwich. Oh, well. Congrats on the Phillies’ big win last night. Cliff Lee looked unhittable. And I hope the Yankees take your advice and hit balls to Abreu close to the wall – or, better yet, over the wall!

  21. Jane Heller

Thanks, Jason. I had no idea, so I appreciate the heads up. I’ll try my best to bring home the W tomorrow, but let’s win today! GO YANKS!

  22. raysrenegade

First off a floral arrangement of kudos for again being the most beloved, and most popular blog poster this side of Timbuktu.
And I knew you would not be shut out of seeing the boys while they came out to the warm confines of Anaheim.
So as you wander underneath that huge red cap with the “A” on it, hopefully you can find a mountainload of transient and traveling Yankee fans to root with you on Thursday.
Now be nice, becuase my boy will be throwing that game for the anti-Devils, so it should be another fun one.

    Rays Renegade

  23. Jane Heller

Thanks again for the heads up about the Bats blog/Tweets today, Laurie. Sure wish the game had gone better though.

A floral arrangement. How chivalrous of you, Renegade! I don’t know about “beloved,” but I’m glad people stop by and are entertained. Yes, I succumbed and got tix for Game 4, so Michael and I will be driving down to Anaheim tomorrow afternoon. It should be a great game with Kaz going for the Angels and CC going for the Yanks. But another extra innings battle? I’m not sure I can take that!

It ended up being a tough one, Dillon. UGH. Eleven innings only to lose it.

  24. wetfeet

See Jane I told you that you had the best blog! Sorry your Yankees did not win, but it was a great game. I just hope it goes to 7 games. I am enjoying the great baseball!

  25. Jane Heller

Yes, there’s always tomorrow, 23gonzo. And I’ll be at Angel Stadium to watch the game, for better or worse!

It was another wild and crazy extra innings contest, wetfeet. I was so stressed out at times I didn’t know what to do with myself! These games are anything but dull, that’s for sure.

Thanks, Cat. I wish you were meeting us in Anaheim, since you work so close by. But I’ll have to carry on without you. Sorry about the Dodgers too. That was a tough, tough loss.

  26. intelihit

I am definitely against this longer season. I would be 4 condensing the entire length in anyway. yet at the sametime it would be cool to get more teams in the playoffs. I know all the pros and cons of a shorter season and leaving it alone(while it seems to be getting longer without really trying). I am probably the biggest baseball fan i know…… But a new reason to keep it shorter that just occured to me, and i am deadly serious about this. This will make me watch less baseball. Is that baseball now interferes with scary movie season. PLus if there is a game on Halloween I’ll save money on not buying candy. What to do…
