My Visit With Amber Sabathia

Since the Yankees didn’t fly home from Minny until today, I took the opportunity to spend a little quality time with CC’s wife Amber. She met me at our usual spot, a cafeteria near Newark Airport, and we chatted about the Yankees, her husband, my husband, and, of course, the upcoming ALCS. She hasn’t changed that much since I first spoke to her during the off-season when CC was still deciding whether to sign with the Yankees.

OK, yes she has. She’s changed a lot. Moving to New York has turned her into a different person.

But she’s still very entertaining company, and she didn’t hesitate to share, which is crucial when it comes to girlfriends. Here’s an excerpt from our afternoon together. It sounded to me as if CC, like any successful pitcher, has a plan for facing the Angels.

Jane, have you ever considered a career as a screenwriter/director of spy films? There was a creepy edge to this video that made me feel like you and Amber were secret agents.

Congrats to the Phillies for advancing to the next round, Jenn. They’re certainly on a roll and their match-up with the Dodgers should be mighty interesting. Glad you liked the video!

Spy films? LOL, Melissa. I’ve been a screenwriter and am writing a script now, but no spying. Maybe you thought Amber and I were spies because of her accent (very James Bond) or because we were standing so far apart!

No, the “puppet,” as you refer to my sweet little She-Fan Doll, Jeff, is sitting quietly in her corner of my office, taking it all in. She has nothing to say at the moment, but that could change.

Now, why am I reminded of that famous tune, when Tina says “we nevah evah do NOTHIN’ nice and easy…we always do it nice…and ROUGH…” And that’s exactly what I think is in the forecast for next week. Rough games, rough weather(?), rough matchups, but hopefully a nice ending. And all the hype & forecasters aside, it’s just plain nice for now that they made it to the next round (and look who DIDN’T)…! It’s been five long years since I’ve been able to savor that, and I sure ain’t gettin’ any younger, and since we’ve got nuttin’ else to do for awhile,…aaahhh!

It is rough weather at the moment, Dave. CA hasn’t had rain in months and now we’re getting part of some typhoon in the Pacific. First fires. Now mud slides. Paradise sure is fun. Yes, we must savor the fact that the Yankees are into the next round, but as the week goes on we must focus on the mission at hand: beating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim!

Who’s “The Boss of this family,” Paul?” And you think I’m nuts? LOL!

Glad your co-workers couldn’t hear you, Emma. It would be too hard to explain what you were watching! HAHA. Yes, the rain is supposed to be gone by Thursday. I hope for the Dodgers’ sake that the forecasters are right.

    Jane!
LOL. I was watching your video here at work and cracking up and looking around my co-workers but the majority have their headphones on so they can’t hear me. Too Funny.
    .
Rain today and tomorrow here in Southern Cal, but starting Thursday it will nice weather.

Well, why not go for it, Buz? I mean, if CC throws a no-hitter then he won’t have to worry about all the Angels base runners! A simple solution!

With your connections, can you tell Mrs. CC to tell CC to tell John Lackey that he should sign with the Orioles this offseason?

  9. Jane Heller

I’d be happy with not using Joba or Gaudin as the fourth starter, Babu. But the Yankees have to decide which one they want as a possible long reliever/emergency starter. I think Gaudin has to be on the roster this time.

I think you should go straight to Mrs. Lackey, Jordan, assuming there IS a Mrs. Lackey. Maybe she’ll convince her husband to sign with the O’s. The wives do seem to have an influence, so get her on board!

Jane: Okay. THIS was the best conversation. Trip Figgins, yell “Jeff,” hook up w/ Swisher, the British accent. Jane, you amaze me. You really, really do šŸ™‚ I hope Amber tells CC to throw the no-no. If he doesn’t do it, just blame her for not telling him šŸ™‚

I’m rooting for CC too, Ted. He seems like a very nice guy.

Glad you liked the conversation, Virginia. Sometimes you just have to use unusual tactics to beat a team like the Angels. If Amber is our secret weapon, so be it. If she fails, no more conversations with her!

    Jane,
Considering CC has his Cali roots, you knew that Amber would get city sliked by the end of the season. I wonder if she considers herself a bi-coastal woman now, or just a seasonal transplant.
Whichever she picks, you know the Sabathia’s Christmas Card list will be extended beyond control this year with their new Yankee entourage, the old Brewers’ consort, and of course, her Cleveland posse’ extra ordinaire.
But in it all, if she can keep her man straight from the homer to the ballpark, it should be an interesting series.
I wonder if they are putting up the Burnett’s in the guest room?

Peter, I love the character in the vid because she’s so skinny and her hands and feet are so huge. LOL! Congrats to you on the Phillies’ march forward into the NLCS. Should be a great series against the Dodgers.

Hey, Shelley. I hope all is well with you too. Your Nationals have ended their season, but at least you still have the Yankees. And now that we know CC will throw a no-hitter…..

Amber must have a gigantic Christmas card list, Renegade. And she probably has a staff of ten to buy the cards and send them out! I should have asked her if she invited the Burnetts to stay over. My bad!!!!!
