Trying To Stay Calm

I got home late from my Thursday night writer’s workshop, and immediately starting thinking about Yankees-Red Sox. Will the Yankees break their 2009 losing streak at Fenway? Will they continue their winning ways? Or will the suddenly hot Sox reassert themselves in The Rivalry and succeed in inching closer to first place?
I decided to put my musings here. Let’s go to the videotape.
What’s your prediction for Game 1?

  1. JQuist

*This off-day was lame… I usually catch the encore games after work, but when the Yankees have an off-day – TV just seems like a waste of time. Hopefully we take out the built-up energy on Boston tomarrow – can’t wait to see wait goes down as well… Check out my off-day update lol.

  2. lenn23

If these games are anything like Yankee games in Boston usually are then I predict that I’ll be drunk by the fifth inning. These two teams play the same game every time. From the caveman days to baseball on Mars in a hundred years it would be the same game. Long and stressful! I just hope they can win at least one game this time in Boston.

Jane, I think we need a win in the first game or we could risk a sweep. We would still have a good hold on first place but no Yankees fan would be happy. I’m going to predict tonight’s game will be 7 – 5 New York.

BTW, Dave, sorry I haven’t responded to your write up’s here but I wasn’t sure how often you would be back on line. We need a lucky lyric from you — something for Pettitte to feed off of. See what you can do.

  4. cheshirecat9

Hi Jane. That cafeteria must have very good food! My prediction Yanks win it 4-2. Andy goes 7 strong innings but leaves the game 2 -2. In the top of the 8th we score two runs on a single, stolen base, double, sacrifice to move runner over to third and a single. Hughes and Mo shut it down. Actually in this scenario Andy will still be the pitcher on the record so he will get the win right? Go Yanks!

  5. Jane Heller

I agree, JQuist. The off day was lame. I kept wandering around feeling lost, like there was nothing to DO. I’m sure the players felt exactly the opposite! I hope the Yanks will show up with a lot of intensity and play hard.

Hahaha, Len. So you’ll be drunk by the fifth inning? Actually, while I agree that the games are always long and stressful, I disagree that they’re the same game every time. In fact, that’s the beauty of this rivalry: there’s always a new twist: a controversial call, a pitcher’s duel, a blowout, a steal of home (Hello, Andy! Watch out for Ellsbury!), etc. So I’ll be watching with interest – and maybe some alcohol.

A 7-5 win tonight would be fine with me, Diane, although I’d love to see Andy get a win and it sounds like you’re predicting a battle of the pens. But I’ll take it, believe me! Winning the first game would be excellent.

Actually, the food is terrible at that cafeteria, cheshirecat, but it’s the only place where I can get food at that time of night. LOL. You’re very specific in your prediction, so I’m wondering if you’re available for psychic readings!!!

Jimbofryer, your 3-2 score sounds like a repeat of the last Oakland game and, if true, will have me squirming with sweaty palms hoping Mo can hold the Sox back in the 9th.

I think this is the last time you’ll see me in the cafeteria, Jeff. No promises, but do you see how skinny I’m getting? Time to fatten me up at a steak joint. Pitching does win championships. On paper it looks like the Yankees have the advantage in this series, but I’ve seen it before: paper means nothing. I like your prediction though.

  6. Jane Heller

Yes, they should be able to hit Penny, Virginia, and I’m hoping they will. Like 10 runs! Haha. It would take the pressure off to have the first game in the bag, but who knows?

Thanks, cheshirecat. HAHAHHA! I hope we can schedule the reading soon!!!!

  7. ibleedpinstripes

Alright Jane! Way to stay positive! LOL. I think it’s kind of okay to be worried though, I mean it is Yankees/Red Sox we’re talking about here. I guess you have to have a good balance of optimism and anxiety… I don’t know. Buuut I think we’ll be fine. I’m not going to let any bad thoughts enter my brain today. Good thought = good mood. We can do this, Jane! LOL

    – Lisa

I hear you LOUD and clear, Jane. Great video, if I ever meet you, I am sure I will be surprised that you don’t sound like your cafeteria replica. As I read my local paper this morning, the Boston Globe, I started to have that nervous feeling in my stomach-the article was all about how maybe the Yankees aren’t getting enough credit for their farm system and perhaps they were “catching” up to the sox. But as you said, I will only think good positive thoughts -we WILL hit, Andy WILL pitch well and our defense will be amazing…

  9. Jane Heller

I think my mind goes on autopilot whenever the Yankees and Red Sox play, Lisa. It’s that excitement and anxiety combined that creates the fun (if that’s what it is – lol). We can do this!

Interesting about the Globe article, etoubman. Our farm system isn’t all that bad after all? I think the fact that our bull pen is filled with farmhands proves that point. And now for the positive mantra: We hit tonight, we pitch well tonight, we win tonight.

  10. raysrenegade

My predicition for game one is Pain.
Simple, reoccuring and pulsing pain for each team.
they know each others wek spots and their strengths, but it is going to take a simple amount of thrust and pop to get this over with without a major artery busting from the stress.
So that migraine will be the result of all the thinking, second guessing and hindsight that will flash throughout everyone’s mind this weekend.
Now where did I hide that Tylenol?

  11. travelingbballbabes

I think tonight rests on which Andy shows up to pitch. I will feel much better about the rest of the series if they win tonight, but for now, I will remain tired and scared…

  12. Jane Heller

May the best team win indeed, FBC! I know it’ll be another great series between our guys. I heard there’s rain in the area though? A delay would make the games even crazier.

The video is so me, Cat? LOL. I guess it must be, since I wrote the words. But hopefully I have a little more meat on my bones than “she” does.

Jeez, Renegade. Which medical thriller were you reading before you wrote that comment? Pulsing pain. Arteries bursting. Maybe I’ll skip the game altogether. HAHA.

I’m with you, Serena. I want the first one out of the way and then I’ll relax a little. Notice I said “a little.”

Andy’s last three starts have been good, Emma, but for some reason the Yankees just haven’t hit behind him. I hope that’ll change tonight. Sounds like Randy Wolf has the same problem.

  13. crzblue2

So Andy does not get much run support like Randy Wolf. Too bad pitchers can’t hit in the AL. Randy hit one out in his last start. He pitches tonight. Love the video and the clapping at the end. The Dodgers were taping …what is his name John Cena clapping and he seemed like he was having a lot of fun on the field. Good luck Jane and relaaaaax. I finally got around to posting a new thread (post)

  14. southernbelle

Jane: I love Jeter, but I only wanted to put 5 Yankees because otherwise it would be the whole team! All the girls like Jeter. I wanted to show the other hotties and cuties that aren’t as popular. I still have to do all the other divisions! -Virginia

  15. Jane Heller

I get it, Virginia. Good idea showing the other guys. I’ll look forward to your next one with the other divisions.

  16. Erin Kathleen

I’m, um, actually hoping the Yankees win this series because I’d really like to see Texas win the wild card. They have such an exciting young team and, well, the Red Sox already have a couple of WS championships this decade. They don’t need anymore. So yeah, go Yankees, I guess.-Erin

  17. Jane Heller

Well, it wasn’t a ringing endorsement, Erin, but I’ll take it gladly. Go Yankees indeed!

Thanks, Dillon. The videos are fun to do. You should try one.

  18. jimmy27nyy

    Very nice video, Jane !!!
I look forward to a big weekend by the Yankees, winning at least two of the three games against the Red Sox !!! … The Yanks are off to a great start tonight in the first game, leading 2-1 in the top of the second [first and third, one out, after Jeter’s second hit of the game] !!! … So, of course I am in total agreement with the ending of your video …
“Let’s Go Yankees. Let’s Go Yankees. Let’s Go Yankees” !!!
Take care, Jane !!! … Enjoy the game tonight, and all the games this weekend !!!
And, yes … the score is now: Yankees 6, Red Sox 1 … going into the bottom of the third !!!
    “Go Yankees” !!!
    — Jimmy, “BY&L”

  19. Jane Heller

Hey, Jimmy. I’m watching the game too. I like the way it’s going so far, although I’m worried about Damon’s leg. I hope he’s OK. Should be another great Yankees-Red Sox series. I’d like to see us win at least two out of three, but I just want to get this one first. Then I’ll worry about tomorrow! Have a great evening and let’s go Yanks!

  20. raysfanboy

I admit that I thought the Yanks would continue to beat the Sox, but not as bad as they did tonight. There seem to be no bounds to the Yanks’ dominance, but to mutilate Boston the way you did tonight is, just, well, um, it ain’t right.

  21. Jane Heller

I didn’t expect 20 runs either, raysfanboy. The Yanks haven’t scored that many runs in the last few games, so I guess they were due. Not complaining!
