Girardi Needs To Get Tossed Again

Joe.Ump.jpg
Well? The last time he got mad the Yankees woke up and reeled off seven straight wins. The streak ended tonight with a lame 8-4 loss to the Mariners in the series finale. So my advice to Joe is to work himself into a really good lather against the Blue Jays tomorrow.

Here’s another thing that needs to happen: Tex gets a day off. I touted him as an All-Star in a reputable newspaper this morning and wouldn’t you know he’d make his first error of the season and have an uncharacteristically blah showing? He’s played in every game since Opening Day and he’s finally looking it. Time to rest him.

Also on the list: CC needs to figure out why he pitched so poorly. He kept leaving the ball up and wasn’t fooling any of the Seattle hitters except Branyan, the strikeout king, whose walk in the sixth was CC’s undoing.
cc.leaves.jpg
Maybe the 36-minute rain delay bothered him, since there wasn’t any rain. Or maybe he was sleepy and craved a nap. Or maybe he was dying for a burger and a nap.

Whatever. He made way for Aceves, who was brilliant until he wasn’t. Why he was left in to pitch the ninth was beyond me, but Branyan’s bomb off him not only hit the Mohegan Sun restaurant in center field but traveled all the way to Santa Barbara and broke my living room window.

A bright spot was Matsui, who had been relegated to the bench during interleague play but came back to life as the DH. He belted a homer and a double – much to the delight of the small group of his family members visiting from Japan.

Otherwise, the game was disappointing. The ninth inning rally started by Cano and Swisher quickly fizzled. There would be no walkoff. No celebration. No pie. Sadly.

Is it lame to say “you can’t win them all”? We can go on another tear right away. But I agree with you — we need to rest Tex and we need to find out what is wrong with C.C.

So when do we get the voting results for the All Star Game? Hope everyone voted the permitted 25 times. What a nerd I am!

BTW, saw your piece on Yankee Magazine — very nicely done. The pictures were great — but when are we going to get to see one of your hubby?

It’s disappointing that we couldn’t close the gap to two games but that’s what happens when you leave your pitches up. Eric Hinske is probably getting splinters sitting on the bench. Time to get him up so that he can give Tex some rest. Maybe it will help him as much as it helped A-Rod. I think we’ll see a much improved CC in the second half of the season. I think he’ll rise to the occasion.

Glad you saw the “Yankees Magazine” show, Diane. I got so many emails and Tweets from people who watched it during the rain delay. So funny, since I didn’t get to see it here. My hubby likes to remain behind the scenes and is very shy. But he’s enjoying his 15 minutes in his own way. I think CC will be fine. He just had a bad game. But I really do think Tex should get a day off, especially with Hinske or Swisher to spell him.

I agree, Scott. Hinske could have come off the bench and filled in for Tex last night. He also could have pinch hit in the ninth instead of Jorge, whose thumb is bad enough to keep him out of today’s game. But let’s hope we start a new streak today!

Losing to the Mariners broke our streak against them, Dillon, but it was bound to happen sometime. So we’ll turn the page and hope AJ picks the team up today.

I don’t consider one loss a streak, Jeff! And putting the Yanks in the same sentence as the Mets is too awful for words!

I just watched your segment on Yankee Magazine also. I enjoyed it! I have the day off from work today so I am celebrating my independence by watching a day game on a weekday. I’m not too worried about last night’s game. I think the winning starts again today.

I think watching the Yankees is the perfect way to celebrate your independence, Cheshirecat. It’ll be an even better day if the Yanks start the series with a win. (Are you listening, AJ?) Glad you got to see the segment!

I don’t think they’ve posted a clip on the YES web site, Bern. I’m hoping that when the producer sends me the DVD, they’ll give me permission to upload it here (yes, they’re strict about that stuff but worth a try). Thanks for the vote of confidence!

    My sentiments exactly, moneyball.

Nice to Matsui come alive, V. Maybe it was all that pent up energy from riding the pine during the interleague games. It’s sort of now or never for him.

I’ll take today’s win and go from there, Erin. We face Halladay tomorrow, so that one won’t be easy.

Thanks, Scott. Today’s win was mighty satisfying, because it looked as if the offense was AWOL again and I was beginning to feel sorry that AJ wasn’t getting run support. But it all had a happy ending with Mo closing it out in style.

I would think that foremost in the Yankees’ disappointments this season–and there are not as many as people might think–would be CC’s performance.

This is a guy who K’s LOTS and LOTS of people. Typically one per inning. Not so this year. Plus his walks are way up.

Perhaps he’s overcompensating? Feeling the pressure? Whatever it is, he is not performing like an ace should.

Nice blog. Congrats on your top ranking!

    Hey, Jane …

Congratulations on being ranked #1 [again] on top of the Fans Mlblogs Leader’s List !!! … Another number one ranking for a “best selling” author !!!
    .
I seen your interview on Yankees Magazine during a rain delay before one of the Mariners games [the rain was finally good for something] … You looked great Jane; and, the segment on Yankees Magazine will be an excellent promotion for your book !!!
    .
The Yankees had a nice 4-2 win against the Blue Jays today — the start of another long winning streak !!! … I envision a 4th of July sweep of the Blue Jays this weekend !!!
    .
Take care, Jane !!! … Have a nice Holiday weekend !!!

Thanks, Julia. I don’t do dedication posts, but I’ll certainly write another entry tonight.

Raysfanboy, for the most part I’m very happy with CC’s performances. Today notwithstanding, he’s given the Yankees innings and wins, and while I wish he’d throw shutouts every time out, I think he’s made the adjustment to New York pretty well. It usually takes players a while to settle in. Thanks for stopping by the blog. I appreciate it.

Thanks, Jimmy. So you saw the “Yankee Magazine” segment during the rain delay? Funny how that worked out, right? I was so surprised when I started hearing from people that it was on, since we don’t get the YES shows here in CA. Today’s win was fun and it would be terrific if it leads to another streak. Have a great holiday!

At the risk of sounding sacrilegious, how ’bout a CC for Kazmir swap? I would love to have a guy who would rather get guys out than strike guys out every time.

Ah, ignore that last bit. My Kaz bitterness is oozing tonight.

We couldn’t afford CC anyway. 🙂

CC will find his groove, and so will AJ, it’s all a matter of time before these two pitchers pitch their best game. Joe Giradi gets the Yankees fired up every time he turns it up with his yelling of the umpires, which is funny to see honestly.

CC for Kazmir? I don’t think so, raysfanboy. I’m hanging on to the big fella. He looked bad yesterday, but he’s so durable and I honestly think he has great years ahead of him. Why are you down on Kaz? A strikeout pitcher is every team’s goal!

That call on Tex at first yesterday was clearly botched, Matthew, didn’t you think? The replays all showed Tex was safe. I was surprised Girardi didn’t argue more strenuously, but I guess he’s picking his shots.
