My Upcoming Trip To Yankeeville

Since tonight’s Yankees-Rays game was rained out, I decided to muse about my trip to New York (I leave Thursday). I’m getting jazzed about all the cool things I’ll be doing in the Apple.
Well, there’s one thing I’m not looking forward to.
As anyone who’s read my book may remember, I’m not wild about flying. If there’s turbulence I tend to guzzle too much plane wine and end up like this.
With any luck, my cross-country flight will be smooth and uneventful, and I’ll arrive at JFK on Thursday night with all my faculties.
On Friday, I’ll be doing my weekly segment on “The Natural,” the New Jersey-based radio show where I joust with host Greg Marotta about the Yankees. (He thinks Joba should be in the pen. I don’t. Not anymore.)
But the rest of the weekend will be family time. I haven’t seen my mother in a while, so it’ll be great to visit with her in Westchester.
(No, that isn’t my mother. I just felt the need to put a nice lady up there. Hopefully, my actual mother will be wearing the Jeter jersey I bought her. She has lots of opinions about the Yanks and should be good She-Fan Cam material.)
After resting up at Mom’s, it’ll be on to the city for some serious media scrutiny about my book.
Are you ready for this? Barbara Kopple, who won two Oscars for her documentaries, is interviewing me for the doc she’s shooting about the Yankees. It’s scheduled to air in the fall on ESPN. For all I know, I’ll end up on the proverbial cutting room floor, but it was exciting to be contacted and I’m looking forward to meeting Barbara.
No clue what she’ll want to talk about for two hours, but I guess I’ll find out. I did love her two Oscar winners:
“Harlan County, U.S.A.” about the coal miner’s strike in Kentucky…
and “Shut Up & Sing” about the Dixie Chicks’ crusade for freedom of speech.
A little later that afternoon, I’ll head to the YES Network’s production studio to tape a segment  for “Yankees Magazine,” the weekly show hosted by Bob Lorenz.
I’ll be sure not to mention that I regularly rip Michael Kay on this blog (gently).
Wednesday will be the best day of all: my first trip to the new stadium for the Yankees-Nationals game. I can’t wait to see the Yanks in action. I’m also dying to sample all the food everyone’s been talking about. Watching this MLB video about the Food Network concession made me really hungry, although I could do without the fried pickle.
I’ll be sitting with my husband and my friend Patty from the New York Times. We’ll be up in the nosebleeds (section 323) but behind home plate. If anybody’s going to the game on the 17th, please stop by and say hi.
Also….this is still to be confirmed, fingers crossed….I’ll be having a signing for my book before the game, from 4:30-6, right outside the one-and-only Stan’s Sports Bar across the street from the Stadium!
Stan’s is an institution in Yankeeville. Its owner, Louis Dene, who happens to live part time in Santa Barbara, has managed to keep the place hopping for years. If you’ve been there, you know that it’s wall-to-wall Yankee fans.
I’m hoping we’ll be able to sell books right in the middle of all the craziness, with the help of Denise, the community relations manager at the Bay Plaza Barnes & Noble in the Bronx.

The main thing for that night is…IT CANNOT RAIN!
I think I’ll start my anti-rain dance right now.
Whew. I’m a little dizzy and those feathers made me sneeze, but it was worth it if it keeps the rain away.

well it won’t rain. I always decide that and it never seems to. even on the other night when andy lost and it might as well have rained. it was pouring in manhattan at 6 pm. by 7 the weather that night was gorgeous. it didnt start raining again until about 11.

as far as your seat locale goes, i’m sure you will love it. on my last game i sat in 326 in the 3rd row and the view was great. that terrace section is quite reminiscent of the old upper deck — now those grandstand seats do look way back from the action, but i think you’re going to love it. i sat in 211, 227-B and 326 and i loved all three locations. anyway i posted some pics from 326 if you want to check them out.

i wish you much success with your media events and especially the documentary. keep us posted please on how that goes.

PS stan’s still looked busy to me..maybe not quite as much as it was, but still doing ok as far as i could tell.

Are you really being interviewed by Bob Lorenz? He doesn’t host Yankees Magazine. He hosts the pre and post game shows. To me, that’s even better than Yankees Magazine! You’d have a bigger audience, I think. I’ll try my best to get over to Stan’s to see you. Enjoy your time with your family.

  3. heartruss

Jane, looks like you will be very busy while you are out in New York City. But it all sounds very fun. Here in Virginia, it has been raining with the accompanying thunder and lightning. It is a bit different from California. I know it will stop raining. I wish I were closer to your book signing but I am about 8 hours away by car so I won’t be able to come, but I have a feeling there will be a crowd there anyway.
Hopefully you take your laptop and keep us apprised of everything that happens.

You’ve got quite the itinerary! How exciting! I’ve seen both of those documentaries and look forward to the next one. I just ordered your book from my local B&N. I was just going to get it on-line, but the clerk was so helpful I felt a little obligated to get it there. You did save a little ink in that magic pen to autograph it for me, right? Can’t wait to see some footage of your Mom! (Jeter jersey…too funny!) I’m sure you’ll have a great trip. Looks like the only thing we have in common this June is baseball…and wine? 😉

Stan’s is the greatest, but I have to admit that it’s a little strange that it is no longer directly across the street. The trip to NYC sounds like it will be a very enjoyable experience (then again, when isn’t it?). I hope you have better luck with no rain than I did. My rainout was re-scheduled for September, although I may exchange my ticket for another game. Let’s hope the Yanks maintain their grip on 1st place heading into the Red Sox series. Yeah, and I agree, Joba stays put in the starting rotation!

  6. Jane Heller

OK, Mike. I’m holding you to it: it won’t rain. And thanks for the heads up about the seats. I like sitting up high (it took me a while to get used to it) and interacting with the fans up there. The owner of Stan’s told me they’ve been doing remarkably well, considering the new Stadium being down the street now. The regulars keep coming, but I’m sure business must be down. Your pics are great, btw.

Bern, I’m not being interviewed by Bob Lorenz. “Yankees Magazine” is a collection of taped pieces that he introduces. That’s my understanding anyway. I hope my signing happens and that you’ll be there. Would love to see you.

Cat, you and I will meet at Dodger Stadium. I have no doubt. At some point this summer, I’m making the trip down there for a game. Meanwhile, enjoy the rain in VA.

Glad you were able to order the book, Lori, but I warn you: I rant about the Angels in it. All they ever do is beat the Yankees! Just be prepared. Otherwise, you’ll probably relate.

I hope I have better luck with the rain than you did, Scott. I felt so bad that your game got postponed. And yes, let’s hope we beat the Rays today, tomorrow and Monday. (OK, I’m being greedy. I admit it.)

OoOh.. pretty fun filled day you have planned there, lol..
You must tell Bob Lorenz that I think he’s the awesomest =)
I will try and make it to the game.. most likely I will. Probably be in the bleachers, but I will come & meet u! =)

  8. Jane Heller

It’ll be great to see you, V! Hopefully, the Yanks will even win the game that night.

Nope, just one game this trip, Julia. No time for more, unfortunately.

The trip isn’t until next week, Dillon. 🙂

  9. cathnyc

Have a great trip out here. And don’t worry, it only rains for us Friday night season ticket people.

  10. Jane Heller

Then it’s lucky I’m not going to the game on a Friday! Too bad you won’t be there on 6/17 though.

    Hey, Jane …

Well, I have been busy the last month or so, which has limited my blogging activities; but, I had to stop by your blog for a visit before your trip to New York … It looks like you have a very exciting itinerary planned, especially your first visit to the new Yankee Stadium !!! … I haven’t been to the new Stadium yet, but will try to attend your book signing at Stan’s Sports Bar on Wednesday, June 17th … Jane, it will be great to meet you at that time [is the book signing still officially on your schedule ???] …
Another tough loss against the Red Sox tonight … The Yankees 0-7 record vs. the Sox [so far] this season is not a very nice number to look at … Wang and Hughes were very ineffective; the Yankees had some chances to score a few more runs; it just wasn’t meant to be on his night !!! … This record needs to be reversed quickly, starting tomorrow with CC Sabathia on the mound !!!
Jane, have a safe trip to New York !!!
I hope I get a chance to meet you at your book signing next Wednesday !!!
    “Go Yankees” !!!

Jimmy, thanks for stopping by. I would love to meet you when I’m in NY. I leave in the morning. I am still waiting to hear if the Barnes & Noble in the Bay Plaza shopping center in the Bronx will be able to work out a signing outside Stan’s before the game on 6/17. They’re still up in the air about the logistics, so as soon as I know for sure I’ll post the info. Yes, tonight’s loss was tough to watch. I pray CC can turn things around so we can salvage the final game in the series!
