If The New Yankee Stadium Were A Hotel, I’d Book A Room

From every photo I’ve seen, every description I’ve read, every anecdote I’ve heard, the new Stadium has plenty of “wow” factors. Yes, there are some obstructed views. Sure, the ticket prices are insane. But the seats are totally plush.

Just kidding.Β
The place looks absolutely gorgeous, and I wish I’d been there for today’s workout.

Johnny Damon seemed to be enjoying himself.

The kids were having a good time.
kids.signing.jpg
The concessions were open for business.

So was the promised farmer’s market.

Even the rest rooms were polished to a high sheen and ready to go.

(I’m assuming they didn’t forget the she-fans and built us some bathrooms too.)
Will Friday’s exhibition game against the Cubs be rained out? I hope not – especially with “Sully,” the Hudson River Pilot, poised to throw out the first pitch.

But mostly, I can’t wait for the season to start on Monday. In my continuing quest for an accurate forecast of how my Yankees will fare this year, I consulted former MLBlogger, Paul Lebowitz, who not only holds forth on his new site, Paullebowtiz.com, but writes an annual Baseball Guide in which he provides in-depth analyses of all 30 teams, complete with starting lineups, rotations, bullpens and benches. And, yes, he makes predictions.
Paul.Bookcover.gif
Now on sale, the book begins with Paul’s prediction for how the AL East will stack up. But I was too nervous to peek, so I skipped ahead to the AL Central. Here’s how he calls that race.
* Indians
* Twins
* White Sox
* Tigers
* Royals
AL West?
* Angels
* Athletics
* Rangers
* Mariners
Moving over to the National League, Paul, a Mets fan, figures that the divisions will go like this.
NL East:
* Marlins
* Phillies (Wild Card)
* Mets
* Braves
* Nationals
NL Central:
* Cubs
* Reds
* Cardinals
* Brewers
* Astros
* Pirates
NL West:
* Giants (the book went to press before Manny signed with the Dodgers)
* Dodgers
* Diamondbacks
* Rockies
* Padres
Paul backs up his choices with all sorts of information that makes the book as fun to read as it is authoritative.
Eventually, it was time for me to flip the pages back to the beginning and find out where he placed the Yankees in the 2009 campaign.
Drum roll.
drumroll.jpg
AL East:
* Yankees
* Red Sox (Wild Card)
* Rays
* Orioles
* Blue Jays
applause_l.jpg
So far, so good.
I turned the page to check Paul’s division series predictions.
NLDS:
* Cubs vs. Phillies = Cubs in 3
* Giants vs. Marlins = Giants in 5
ALDS:
* Indians vs. Red Sox = Red Sox in 5
* Yankees vs. Angels = Yankees in 4
Applause_16f206a6-5c96-452e-80ff-b36fbcfa1a14.jpg
And then it was onto his picks for the league championships.
NLCS:
* Cubs vs. Giants = Cubs in 5
ALDS:
* Yankees vs. Red Sox = Yankees in 6
fist-bump-yankees.jpg
And finally….to his World Series prediction.
Yankees vs. Cubs = Yankees in 6!!!!!!!
Paul
hates the Bombers, so this one must have made him ill. I, on the other hand, was thrilled and so were the other Yankee fans I told. Here are their reactions.
Note: I’ve attempted to leave comments on other blogs today, but it’s been hit and miss (or should I say “swing and miss?”). Not sure if the site is having technical problems or it’s just my computer. Just know that I’m TRYING.

    Jane – and Steven over at the Pinstripe Bible and the Baseball Prospectus have the Red Sox winning the division! I think we are in for a great season which is shaping up for a tight finish to the wire. The Red Sox-Rays Home Opener could be in jeopardy for Monday due to rain. Spring in the Northeast; it’s a rainy thing!

    It is raining here in New York today. According to Accuweather it should stop tonight. I will give you a full report on my impressions of the new Stadium.

    I like the AL Central pick. Not thrilled with the playoffs however. We can beat the Red Sox any day. And besides does he honestly think a rematch won’t go the Indians way? He forgot one crucial thing: adrenaline. haha Just kidding.
    I don’t know how I feel about the Yankees winning it all. I guess we’ll see… 4 days!

    Jason, I’m so jealous that you’re going to the Yanks-Indians series! I think a lot of people are predicting the Indians to win the AL Central. The question is….how far will they go after that? They sure kicked the Yankees’ butts in the ’07 ALDS.

    Yeah, the rain is about to wreck havoc on the schedule, Julia. It could wash out a lot of games. Bummer.

    Cheshirecat, I hope you’re right and it’ll be all clear tonight (or at least clear enough), but it sounds like there will be showers all weekend and into next week. Can’t wait to hear your first-hand impression of the new Stadium.

    LOL, Paul. Congrats on the book.

    I didn’t read his guide book last year, Latinyankeerebel, as I didn’t even know about it. But you might check out his site and ask him what his record is.

    Melissa, see above to Jason. I think almost everybody is picking your Tribe to win their division. But the playoffs are such a crap shoot. The team that’s hot wins. Who knows which team that will be?

  5. Jane Heller

    I hope you get to the new Stadium soon too, Jenn. I’m sure your friend’s pix are great. Care to share them?

    Just please don’t let it rain in Baltimore on Monday, Latinyankeerebel. And let CC get a “W.”

    Yes, that Pedro signing pushed your O’s right up there in the standings, Ken.

  6. latinyankeerebel

    Don’t worry Jane, I’ll have a talk with the man above so that it doesn’t rain… maybe do a couple of “no rain” dances… hmm… that really does sound like a good idea though.. no rain dancing…

    “At Last” — took all day to get into Blog Territory, so this should be it…BTW, don’t care whose version you prefer, Etta’s or Beyonce’s, it’s the appropriate tune (and be sure to see the movie, too)…well, here we are, and it’s Almost That Time…wonder if Paul the Bomber Hater is deliberately choosing Us to go all the way as a Hex or Jinx or some such…note he has us beating both the Angels and the Carmine Hose, something I wouldn’t dare dream of, as it would be too delicious…then beating the CUBS?! Hey, if you’re gonna make it a Yankee Dream Season, at least make it the Dodgers…or the Cardinals…or even Payback on the D’backs or Marlins…ah, it’s fun to dream in early April…!!

    Latinyankeerebel, I heard it’s raining hard and steadily. The chances of a game being played are getting slimmer…

    I figured you’d be happy about Paul’s prediction for the Giants, King. I think the pitching staff swayed him in their direction over the Dodgers.

    Do you think Paul might be hexing us, Dave? I admit I was surprised to see us beating the Angels so handily when they’ve given us fits in the past. But they’re not the same Angels with Tex. He’s ours now!

    Judging from the pictures, you’d ALMOST think they just cloned the old Yankee Stadium…but then I noticed the farmers’ market. A farmers’ market in the Bronx?? What IS this world coming to?? LMFAO
    As far as those “predictions” go, I’ve got one for you: the Nats WON’T be dead last in the NL East this year. (Of course, I said that LAST year…and look what happened. I’m not wrong TWICE, Jane!!! LMAO)
    Anyway, I’ll wait for June (when the Nats show up @ the “new” Stadium) and enjoy the payback to Teixeira for “stiffing” us and signing w/ the Bombers. SO much fun…lol

    It stopped raining, Cheshirecat? Woohoo!

    It’s true, Jeff. They’re becoming “entitled.” LOL. So are you taking a break from the Catholics today? I tried to comment on RSBS and couldn’t. But I see from Bob I’m not the only one who’s having tech trouble.

    Red Sox versus Mets, huh, Bob? You must be talking about this weekend’s exhibition game.

    It would be fabulous if it went down to Yankees-Dodgers, Russ. I’d drive down to LA in a heartbeat. Actually, I’m hoping to go to a game there soon.

    Yankees over the Cubs in the World Series? I’m down with that! Let’s Go! The new Stadium looks tremendous. It’s too bad that the average fan can’t afford or even get a ticket. Despite the A-Rod distractions, this season seems to have a special feel to it. Hopefully it will translate into #27…

    Hey, Gary. Thanks for stopping by. I have quite a few friends who are Nats fans so I really hope they do better this year. And yeah, a farmer’s market at Yankee Stadium. Never thought I’d see that!

    You’re right, Scott. This season does have a special feel to it. And while I know anything can happen, I think our guys in pinstripes will win #27. (Please, please.) Meanwhile, I’m waiting for the exhibition game to start in the Bronx. So far it sounds like they’re playing, despite the rain.

    Too bad I couldn’t see how my Blue Jays were ranked. Just kidding, I probably didn’t want to see that either. The stadium looks like a more vibrant and intense version of the old stadium, in my opinion. Nice urinals, that is key, hope they supply pucks. I’ve said too much!

    Hi, Jane …

    I have been busy over the last couple of weeks, so I’m just trying to catch-up on offering comments around the mlblogosphere !!! … Finally, the new season is just about here … I’ll sign up for Yankees vs. Cubs in the 2009 World Series — that sounds great to me — the new Yankee Stadium and the classic Wrigley Field !!! … It all adds up to the Yankees 27th World Championship in 2009 !!!
    — Take care, Jane; and, enjoy the game tonight !!!

    I agree, Jeremy. It’s as if they took the old stadium and put it in HD.

    I’m watching the game right now, Jimmy. Kind of a rough inning for Wang, but not too bad. Very exciting to see the new Stadium. Let’s hope this Yanks-Cubs exhibition is a preview of the WS! Glad you’re back and blogging, Jimmy.

    Jane,
    I had pictures of the urinals from Camelback Ranch but I did not want to put it there. Not that I got to see them but a cousion in Glendale, AZ took the pictures when they were given tours before Spring Training started. They all had to wear hard hats.

    Emma, do you know if the Dodgers decided to put Mientkiewicz on the roster? He was fighting for the remaining utility infielder spot.

    OK, I’m good with the Phils making it to the playoffs, even if it’s via the wildcard. But the Marlins winning the NL East? And the Mets third? That’s a surprise. I thought this guy was a Mets fan?
    Anyway, if the new Yankee stadium were a hotel, none of us would be able to afford a room!!!

    The new stadium looks amazing! Wish I could get up there sometime this summer to see it. And I also wish I could say that I disagree with the prediction that the Nationals will finish last in the NL East…but honestly, I do agree with it. I think the Nats will win 75 games this season — a big improvement over last year’s record, but IMO still not good enough to climb out of the cellar. Maybe next year.

    And good luck to the Indians, Aaron.

    I was surprised to see that Paul predicted the Marlins would win the division, Sue. That one was a shocker.

    I hope the Nats will do better this year, Shelley. We all know how unpredictable the season can be – predictions or no predictions.

    Here’s hoping this posts! Jane, I thought it was just me (I’m new to mlblogs). I’ve been having trouble all week. I comment, press submit and blink it’s gone and no post. I thought maybe they initiated a delay to sensor, like the TV networks. lol

  24. Jane Heller

    It’s definitely not you, Yankee Rose. I’m going insane trying to post – the one from yesterday took 2 hours because it wouldn’t go through! – so thanks for persevering. Hopefully, MLBlogs will work out the tech difficulties soon.
