In Memory of Tom Tresh

He was never a star – not like The Mick. But he was the AL Rookie of the Year in ’62 and went to the World Series with the Yanks three times. He died yesterday at 71 of a heart attack.
In the late ’60s, Tresh was one of those players who would actually talk to my friend Lee and me when we’d go to the Stadium and hang out during batting practice. There was hardly any security in those days so you could walk right up to the railing and feel like you were on the field. He was so nice, always smiling, always quick with a funny comment. You don’t forget the ones who treat fans well, at least I don’t. Rest in peace, Tommy.

I like that image a lot. I’ll picture all of them playing a little baseball, Field of Dreams style, then saddling up to a bar for some cold ones.
