Movie Break

I decided the Brewers and Phillies could get along without me, so I went to a screening this morning of “The Secret Life of Bees,” the movie based on the bestselling novel by Sue Monk Kidd. I think it opens nationwide this Friday. It’s probably way too chick-centric for guys reading this (although be prepared to be dragged to the theater if you’ve got a wife or girlfriend), but check out the cast: Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, and the incredible Dakota Fanning.

There was a party after the screening and I met Dakota Fanning. (For those who’ve read a previous post about Caroline Kennedy, no, I didn’t ask Dakota if she’s a Yankee fan.) She’s only 14 years old, but she’s so smart and articulate she could have been 30. I bet she’ll be nominated for an Oscar this winter.
Here’s the trailer of the movie in case anyone’s interested. I’ll get back to baseball in the next post, I swear.

  1. Jane Heller

Nope, Paul. You’re thinking of “Hound Dog,” the little indie film she’s in. This one is a big studio movie. Not a chick flick in the sense that it’s not a romance, but lots of estrogen flowing. Definitely not your deal.

Latifah’s been looking pretty good lately, but I can’t shake that moment in “Set It Off” when one of her friends (I think it’s Jada Pinkett-Smith) says she looks just like Sugar Bear from the cereal box. It’s a pretty funny line in the movie and it’s true!

  3. Jane Heller

I LOVED the Queen on SNL, Jeff!!! She did a great job, and Tina Fey is just amazing as Palin. I found myself talking like her all day in this weird Fargo voice and annoying everybody.

Yeah, Steve, Latifah is looking so good they gave her the Cover Girl contract or one of those cosmetic companies.
